Operation a Success

It has been 3 weeks since I have been out of the sling and gradually I have been able to extend the movement of my left arm. The intent of the surgery was to produce external rotation and the results have been nothing short of miraculous. Dr Wheel is a genius!! Before the operation I could not move my arm from my chest no matter how hard I tried. The following video was taken by the pool in Bali – sorry for lack of t-shirt.

Interestingly I am only slowly reintroducing the use of my arm as it lacks strength and the habits of 3 years die hard. My hand still has significant loss of feeling which also creates uncertainty. Last week I discovered I could push the buttons on the car radio, I can hold a plate with my left hand whilst I put food on it and remarkably I can use a folk to hold food whilst I cut it. Simple little things that I am very excited by. The next challenge is to hold a beer with my left hand and drink it. I am close to being able to do it. Should be the next post.

Wow that’s fabulous Craig well done. God bless these wonderful surgeons they are a God send. My son Jacob and myself have been following your journey and it’s given us so much hope. Jacob was in a high speed motorbike accident last November and has similar injuries to you . He is 3 1/2 months post muscle transfer and has just felt his first flicker in his right arm so keep doing fantastic things because you have someone trying so hard to get to where you are now. Stay well. Maree & jacob

Thanks for your feedback Maree and Jacob. It seems a slow journey but that is because we live the challenge every day. I was out with my brother last night and as he lives in Hobart I hadn’t seen him for 6 months. I was really pleased when he said he couldn’t believe the improvement in my arm movement. Jacob, I hope those flickers get bigger quickly. I remember them well. For me they were in the bicep. I spent a lot of time moving my arm in the pool as I could get heaps more movement due to the bouyancy of the water. Good luck. Craig
